Dear Medical Association and doctors,
Questions regarding doctors' legal right to make choices based on conscience
I am sending these questions to all departments of the Medical Association and to the country's doctors in the hope that doctors and other healthcare professionals will consider whether the things they participate in, with reference to uncritically following orders, are in harmony with their individual conscience. 1. Abortion, where the limit is currently 18 weeks, but where the WHO does not prescribe any upper limit for abortion?

2. Cutting off the breasts or genitals of healthy people, including circumcision. Can a doctor also, without being prosecuted, cut off people's fingers and toes if they are mentally disturbed and want it themselves?

5. Are doctors obliged to ensure that all patients give informed consent by making them aware that, according to the Danish Medicines Agency, all medicines can cause fatal side effects?

The Hippocratic Oath states: ‘I, in my practice as a physician, shall always consider it my duty to use my knowledge with diligence and care for the benefit of society and my fellow human beings.’
But what if the interests of the doctor and society are not the same? Does conscience prevail, or should one be forced to compromise in order to follow state doctrine and do one's job? We have heard of atrocities committed simply because orders were followed. This was a well-known defence strategy during the Nuremberg trials.
 I and many others look forward to the Medical Association's and the doctors response and comments on these questions.
